Intial :- Potential Shots

The music for our music video genre is pop and listening to our music the first time we realised that the music is upbeat fast but aslo the lyrics to the song has a lot of emotion parts, so we need to have some shots that that can show a heartbreak and  shots that can portray a romantic time.

The shots we have intially decided on are : -
  1. Close Up
  2. Zoom
  3. Long Shot
  4. Mid Shot
  5. Extreme Close Up
  6. Two Shot
The Reasons behind the shots above is that we can show a part of a break up and some flashbacks of what it was like when there was a couple in love. Below are 2 stills one of a two shot and one of a close up.

Two Shot
Close Up

Intial : - What Make Up Is Going To Be Used

Our ideas for the make on our actors is to be subtle on the face and heavy on the eyes as this gives a sense of emphasis on the characters and portrays a certain image for our actor as this will indicate through  her eyes her pain of the relationship breaking up.
The above images are of some make up which may be used on our actors for the duration of our music video the brand names are Mac, Elizabeth Arden and L'Oréal.

The blusher that we are thinking of using is from the brand Mac the reason for this choice is because this brand is well known for the subtly effect on the face.

The foundation we are using is brand is Elizabeth Arden as this is what our actor usually wears and this colour matches her face well.

The eye shadow we are using is from L'Oréal the reason behind this choice is because this eye shadow gives a real sense boldness that is needed for this music video.

Intial Target Audience Research

From looking at P!nk's target audience we have seen that she has targeted the audience ranges from the 14-24. Just by looking at this target audience we decided to do our own research and ask a small number of people by doing a focus group with the ranges of 14-24. In this focus group we had discovered that with the themes for our own music video and the type of conventions that we wish to put in we are able to target the audience which made things much easier for us.

From just doing some first hand research about our audience in the focus group we were able to see what our target audience likes and dislikes were about the thoughts of our music video. from the feedback that we had received we believe that our music video should be understandable to our target audience as well as be known as a P!nks music video.

DigiPak Conventions Analysis

I am going to look at two DigiPaks from two different genres of music and discuss the conventions. The two genres I will be looking at is Pop and Rock.

The Pop DigiPak I will be looking at is The Saturdays - Headlines! album. The Saturdays album cover includes a picture of the band with the name of the band in neon lights above the picture. These features are common within the Pop genre. The name of the album 'Headlines!' is shown on the band's magazine covers. The album cover is also very colourful and eye catching which is also a common element found in Pop DigiPaks.

The track list appears on the back cover of the CD case, where it is commonly found on most CDs. The songs are listed in a white font on a blue background. This matches the rest of the CD case and booklet. The barcode also appears on the back of the album as well as The Saturdays official website. On the back of the case it also states in small print that if you insert the CD into a computer's CD-ROM drive you can access exclusive bonus content.

The DigiPak is just a basic plastic case which includes the CD and booklet. The booklet includes messages from each band member and information on each of the songs on the album including who wrote the song, who its produce by and who published it.

The inside booklet is again very colourful and includes pictures of the band members. The colourful layout is a common convention found in Pop albums. The images of the band are in black and white, with a colourful, bright background. This helps the images to stand out as they are contrasting with the background.

The second DigiPak I'm going to look at is for the album 'No Line On The Horizon' by U2. This is an album under the genre of Rock.

The album cover is very plain and features the album logo in the centre of the cover. The band's name and name of the album, as well as a featuring song, can be seen on a sticker in the corner of the cover. The cover isn't as eye catching as The Saturdays album as it isn't colourful and bright. However, a more colourful artwork wouldn't fit in with their genre of Rock.

Like the Saturday's DigiPak, the track list is shown on the back of the case. However, the majority of U2's back cover is taken up by a picture of the band and then the tracks are listed in smaller print at the bottom. Is this a reverse of The Saturday's album as theirs shows an image of the band on the front of the album. Also on the back of U2's DigiPak for 'No Line On The Horizon' is the barcode, record label information and the band's offical website up the side.

This DigiPak is also a basic plastic case which includes a booklet which features photos, lyrics and track information such as who wrote and produced the songs. The booklet is also all in black and white which keeps the theme going as the front and back of the case are black and white. Similarly to The Saturdays - Headlines! DigiPak, the images of the band are also in black and white. Although there are no other colours included in U2's DigiPak.

Overall, these two DigiPaks are very different due to the genres of music. The main difference being the colour schemes as U2's album is all black and white, where as The Saturday's is mainly bright and colourful because of their Pop genre.

Digi Pak Conventions

I have chosen to look at two different genres for my DigiPak conventions analysis. I am going to discuss the conventions included within the two albums I have looked at.

The first album I looked at was the super deluxe edition of ‘The Beginning’ by the Black Eyed Peas which features 5 songs from their other album entitled ‘The E.N.D’ on a bonus disc. This album comes under the genre of hip-hop, electro and techno.
The Black Eyed Peas album cover includes an image of each band member; however the image is in a cartoon style. The digitalised and cartoon style images reflect the techno, hip-hop genre. The track listing is located on the back cover of the CD case. The track listing is divided into two sections; CD 1 – The Beginning and CD 2 – The Best of The E.N.D.

The song titles and other information found on the back of the CD case are in a bold white font. The main image of the back cover is the same image that was used for the front cover of the Black Eyed Peas album The E.N.D. The original price of this album was £12.99. Other pieces of information that can be found on the back of this album include the barcode and the band’s official website.

Like most albums, inside the case there is a booklet consisting of photos and general information about the band and the album. One thing I noticed that isn’t in the booklet is song lyrics. Including song lyrics in the information booklet is usually a popular aspect to include.

The inside of the booklet is very much like the rest of the album’s overall appearance; dark and digitalised. Each page has a black background with lilac and white font and the occasional cartoon style image.

Towards the end of the booklet in the Black Eyed Peas album, there is a page consisting of thank you messages from each band member, and also a page of information including things like the names of producers, marketing co-ordinators and product managers.

The DigiPak itself is a simple plastic case, which opens up to reveal the booklet about ‘The Beginning’ on the left hand side, and ‘The Beginning’ CD, and the piece of plastic holding CD one opens up to reveal the second CD entitled ‘The Best of The E.N.D’ and one small page about the producers and writers of the songs featured on the bonus CD.

The second album I looked at was ‘Kiss & Tell’ by Selena Gomez & the Scene. Selena Gomez has released albums before as an individual artist but this time around she teamed up with her band and they all produced an album together. The album I looked at comes under the genre of pop, dance-pop and pop-punk.

The album cover consists of an image of Selena Gomez. The image is very stereotypical of a pop singer. She is wearing lots of jewellery and has very neutral girly make-up.

The track listing is written on the back of the CD case.

It’s a basic font written in white and pink on a plain black background, however to add a girly touch to the track listing, the ‘&’ signs are small love hearts.

As you can see from the photos, I purchased this album for £3 in the sale, and I think its original price was around £9.99. Like several albums, the barcode and the music label which produced the album are featured on the back. Unlike the Black Eyed Peas album, Selena Gomez’s official website is not listed on the back of the CD case.

The booklet inside the CD case is again very different from the booklet found inside the Black Eyed Peas album as this one contains actual photos of Selena Gomez, and also lyrics to each song featured on the CD. There are a total of 10 images throughout the booklet including the cover image, and they all show typical conventions associated with the pop genre. In each image Selena Gomez is wearing a girly outfit usually consisting of skirts, dresses, jewellery and make-up.

The theme throughout the booklet is pink, black and white. Underneath each song title are the lyrics, and underneath the lyrics it says who the song was written, produced and published by. The last two pages of the booklet are titled ‘credits’ and ‘special thanks’. In very small print at the bottom of the very back page of the booklet, it has the artist’s official website along with some other information.

The overall colour, style and layout of the album reflect the pop genre well. Bright colours and lots of photos are a popular convention found in pop albums. Even the CD disk itself matches the interior and exterior of the CD case; it’s a bright pink disk with silver writing. The CD case is a standard plastic case used for most albums unless, like the Black Eyed Peas album, there is more than one disk included.

Overall as you can see, the two DigiPak’s I have compared are quite different due to the different music genres. Certain areas within the two albums are quite similar for example, the use of colour and images, whereas some of the differences include the amount and style of images, the use of lyrics and the colour schemes.

Consent From Artist

Below is an image from Peram's twitter account seeking permission from P!nk the artist.

Digi Pak Conventions

GenreThe genre of this album is indicated by facial expressions of the artist, especially on the large cover at the back showing her with her eyes closed which indicates to be she is embracing the music so it then makes me think each song means alot to her and alot of thought has gone into them. However the genre is only obvious to me because I am a fan of this artist and I know all of her music in the past has been R&B based so this one will just follow in them footsteps, but without my background knowledge of Rihanna this album cover gives nothing away linking specifically to the genre. Because in her previous album covers rihanna has fitted the R&B image with the clothing and attitude she projects but on the front of this album she has a totally knew look with the red hair which makes her look alot more girly and sweet but her music still indicates she has the "swag" in her.

Star Image
Because Rihanna is used on the cover it will immediately draw in her fans because the star who actually produced the music they love is graced on the front of the album so will attract them in more than if she had something on the cover that didnt relate to her at all her fans may not reliese its her album. Her bold fiesty red hair is definately what will make her stand out from other artists on the shelf and her facial expression shows she has the attitude that everyone knows is an element of her quirky personality. Also by showing her tattoo on her neck indicates to the audience she still has the wild side and bad girl elements left in her even though she is getting older which is elements that her fans will love to know because if fans have been following a certain artist for sometime and know exactly what qualities they have and if they suddenly change fans could be lost so artists do have to be careful. But I believe Rihanna's choice of hair colour was a positive change because is shows how diverse she is as an artist in her looks but aswell as her music but still has the original elements that everyone loves her for.

Image and Colour Pallette
I believe the red colour scheme has been chosen throughout this digipak of the album because Rihanna has incorperated a completely new look around the time her album was due to come out so everything is emphasised around that. The red roses contrast well agaisnt the artists skin in the large photo and also make the whole scene bolder and eyecatching which is exactly what people look for in the album artwork. The images that have been used agaisnt this strong colour scheme reflect to me as love and lust because in all the images used her eyes are closed which makes me think she could be dreaming about something or someone she so dearly wants this is also indicated to me by the red roses linked to love. In the main album cover the artist looks deep in thought which could make the audience wonder exactly what the aim of the image was, in my eyes I think they were trying to show her inner beauty and the fact she didn't have to look at the camera in order to engage with the fans.

Visual Narrative
The only storyline I could relate to this album artwork is what I have just been talking about in the images, the love and lust. In the main album cover the artist looks lost in her thoughts but in a positive way with her pouted lips and hidden eyes shows us she could just be thinking about that one person that she loves, however in the larger photo her body language and facial expression suggests shes annoyed at herself or angry in some way by her frowned forehead and her stretched out body which indicates lust to me, love for someone she can't have. I believe if this album came with a picture book this would be the storyline it would use because by the artist using simple facial expressions you can instantly relate to her feelings and even by listening to some of the songs from the album they are about loving and hating someone. Also because of the roses being used in the images it suggests Rihanna has suddenly turned alot more girly compared to her previous album "Rated R" where she was seen as more of a rockchick. This element again shows her fans how diverse she can be as an artist but still produce the best quality music she can.

Typography and Composistion
The text/font that has been used on this album cover is very plain and simple and I believe this is because they didn't want to take all the attention away from the stunning photos used of the artist. Personally I thought the font used would of been more vintage looking and maybe a copy of the font used on her tattoo to link two elements together but this white writing does stand out more than I thought it would, i think the colour works so well because the artist is so well known her name didn't need to be really bold, if fans saw her picture they would automatically know it was her this is why it's been posisitioned in the corner of the album rather than in the middle. The font of the album title is also the same but it's just been made slightly larger and with the large spaces between each letter it makes it look more unique and different which is exactly what the artist is like.
